Process

This details my process of designing a garden; however this is flexible according to the clients needs.

Initial Consultation

The first step is a site visit and consultation usually taking approximately two hours, depending on the size of the garden. I would discuss with the client the project in outline and establish the garden we wish to achieve – short or long term. A letter or email summarising the meeting will follow.

Written Report/concept sketches (optional)

Following the initial consultation, either a written report or concept sketches can be provided (whichever is most appropriate).

Topographical Survey

I would always recommend both a detailed and up to date site survey and a soil analysis (if one does not already exist). These provide vital information about local conditions, soil structure and long-term horticultural stability.

Proposal

Once we have agreed on the overall design I will send you a proposal outlining my costs and further information regarding the design e.g. details of a landscaper. If the client accepts my proposal 50% of the fee is requested in advance. The proposal allows for one re-draw or alteration to the plans.

Garden Layout Plan

On receipt of the survey, signed copy of the proposal and advance payment I will start to draw up a master plan of the garden. This forms the basis of our future discussions re how the garden project progresses. It is important that the client, designer and contractor are ‘all singing off the same hymn sheet’.

Detailed Planting Plan

A detailed planting plan showing the names of the individual plants and quantities is recommended. Any sourcing and costing of plants is charged at an additional rate.

Working Drawings and Elevations

These will be discussed with you as necessary and will be charged at an additional rate.

Project Supervision

A hard landscaper will be recommended to carry out the work and oversee the project. They will provide a quotation for the work required and charge the client direct.

Aftercare and Maintenance

After completion I will undertake a follow up visit to see how everything is progressing and then discuss any future visits and maintenance required.
